Cyr and Von Glitschka

YOUR MARKETING PLAN ASSIGNMENT

Before you can begin to put together a marketing plan for your work, you need to fully identify the unique vision that you bring to the world, articulating what makes you different from the competition.

A brand analysis is integral to establishing a clear picture of your work and determining its positioning in the marketplace. It will also guide me in assisting you in putting together the appropriate body of work and connecting it with the appropriate target market. Since it is always wise to channel your time and money resources wisely, it is best to focus on one key target market at a time.

If you have not yet established or identified an existing brand, it is best to start the process. The best way to begin is to take an honest look at not only your working process and approach, experience, capabilities, client relations and market preferences but also your core beliefs and values, creative interests and aspirations. They are what collectively make your offerings unique. By defining your brand from the inside out, you are setting a foundation from which to strategically position yourself in the marketplace.

Being selective in your approach to new business is essential to building your market value for the long term. By developing relationships with clientele that share your vision, you begin to build industry recognition and leverage to do like projects. Actively pursuing work under a synergistic approach is the best way to capitalize on what you do best. Listen to this podcast on<span style="color: #fce5cd; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Designing Your Life.

By defining your brand in the marketplace, you are placing in the buyer’s mind a certain profile of what you have to uniquely offer. The profile that you create is very important in that it will aid in not only your strategic positioning but also your overall presentation and promotional messaging.

PART ONE: YOUR BRAND

Your Niche... your uniqueness. Define yourself as an artist and creative being. These qualities collectively make you and your work unique in the marketplace.

1. Creative Personality:
Describe your creative personality, include special interests, etc.

What are your creative business’s likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses?
By identifying current problems in either the production or marketing of your art and begin to breakdown the barriers that are preventing you from reaching your goals. Analyzing your strengths will help to potential opportunities.

What are your creative business’s core beliefs and values? This can be incorporated into your brand as well as markets.

Be detailed and honest in your answers, as you are the one that needs to be happy in order for the business to thrive and to be truly authentic.

2. Working Habits & Environment:
Describe your creative business’s current working schedule and compare that to your ideal.

What habits do you do consistently?

Can you work within client parameters and deadlines or do you need to establish your own?

Describe your current working environment, strengths and weaknesses, and give ways to improve it. Give details to all points.

3. Creative Work:
Take a real hard look at your work as a collective whole. Look for things that you do repeatedly or enjoy doing.

Any market, genre, stylistic preferences, or types of work that you tend to gravitate towards?

What are your current capabilities and experience and how do they match the work you really want to do? Be very descriptive in your responses to all points.

4. Creative Methods & Approach:
Analyze your development of concepts, methods and technique in detail. What is your creative process and approach? Be specific on all points.

5. Creative Potential:
Detail your vision for your creative work. Take some time with this one and really focus on what you really want to do and not what you think you, at this time, are capable of doing.

This will determine the direction for you and your work.

PART TWO: TARGET AUDIENCE

1. Define your Target Market: Helps to establish a valuable model for decision making while maintaining focus and clarity. You will have lots of lectures to assist you in this task.

Business-to-Business (you sell to businesses) or Business-to-Consumer (you sell direct to the consumer). Some will do both.

List the geographic, demographic, and psychographic profile of your desired market. Who are they, where are they located, and what do they buy and how do they buy. What publications or media do they look at? What organizations do they belong to? What events do they attend? Be as detailed as possible.

Develop a working knowledge of the markets(s) in which you want to establish yourself. Every market has its own "language".

Research buyers, influencers and major industry trade organizations and publications that showcase work in that market.

Seek mentors. Are there other artists that have already achieved success in this area?

List Practical Clients: Itemize a specific list of clients, companies, brands, products,
or markets you think would benefit from your work.

List Your Dream Clients: Once you have a practical list, push yourself further and
develop another itemized list of potential dream clients or unorthodox genres you have
never considered before. (This is how you'll grow your reach)

PART THREE: STRATEGIC MARKETING

Establish a Strategy: Outline your strategy to market your work to the above targets.

How will you position yourself, so people find you? How will you get your work in front of those
who can potentially hire you?

Website: Create and drive traffic to your website portfolio.

Online Portfolios: Have secondary portfolios on established platforms like
Behance.net, Adobe Portfolios, iSpot, Society of Illustrators, Hire an Illustrator, etc.

Social Media: As much as possible, keep your social media accounts across the
various platforms in line with your brand identity. The goal is to have each point back to
your primary website.

People Love Process: When posting on social media, don't just post your final work.
Instead, share your process, how you think, and how you created your work. Don't limit
this to just client work. Consider personal creative projects as well.

Secondary Online Promotion: Itemize a specific list of sites associated with the
industries, organizations, tools, curated services, and companies that would benefit
from featuring or sponsoring your work.

Be specific and include follow up procedures.

Explore strategies that are multimedia: print, broadcast, online, interactive, public relations, social, etc. Targeting an audience on many fronts. Look to all the lectures during class to assist you in this task.

Establish professional contacts and network. Keep updated on what is going on in the field.

Educate yourself in the marketplace by signing up for free industry newsletters online, join groups on social media, etc.

Explore and be informed about all of your options including being open to venture out on your own ideas.

Developing a Game Plan… one step at a time.
By now, you've defined what it is that you are selling, determined who it is that you want to sell to and explored various promotional outlets that will put your work in the eyes of potential buyers and the media. It’s time to begin establishing an effective marketing plan.

Developing a game plan clearly defines your goals and establishes your objectives. There is great power when you are able to clarify, define and set direction to your efforts. Without a solid plan of attack, you can easily get side tracked into areas that will distract you from accomplishing your overall goals.

CLASS DELIVERABLES:
Your Marketing Plan should include the info below in a edited, designed format. Your final format should be an 8.5x11 optimized PDF file. (Horizontal)

1. BRAND: convey your brand in a clear and concise way.

2. GOAL: What is your big career goal? What are you working towards?
Vision Statement: List your short-term and long-term goals. Where do you want to be in ten years? What do you want to be doing? What new skills do you still need to learn and improve on?

3. Adding music, which should be royalty free or self-generated, along with animated graphics will enhance the viewing experience.

There are a few things that you should consider when developing your video:

1. INTENT: What do you intend your video to do for you?

Will you be promoting a particular project or body of work, selling prints or other merchandise, introducing a new book project, promoting an upcoming lecture or workshop, etc? Have a focus for the video along with a landing page link for the audience to follow through with.

2. DESIGN: Design your video to specifically address your intention and target a particular audience.

Don't make your video an all encompassing catch-all for everything and everyone. Be specific and and your returns on your investment will be greater.

3. SEQUENCE: Structure your video in a way that tells your story.

Utilize story boarding techniques to create impact. Start by doing quick sketches and notations on potential directions in which to take your video. Put all of your imagery and video clips in a folder in the appropriate order to assist in importing them into iMovie.

Storyboarder: https://wonderunit.com/storyboarder/

4. SOUND: Select the soundtrack that will enhance BUT not overpower your video.

I have created custom tracks for all of my videos. If that is not a skill set you have or want to acquire, I suggest you explore royalty free music options. Voice-overs are also a great way to enhance your video.

As we forge into the twenty-first century, publishers and content creators face a new generation of readers where interactive and new media platforms are at the forefront. Advancements in technology and the widespread use of the Internet through smartphones and handheld devices have spawned a plethora of web-based and interactive storytelling enhancements that are being gradually introduced into the book culture.

With the advent of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality, quick response (QR) codes that link to video, audio, gaming and web-based enhancements, 3-D stereoscopic and lenticular printing and e-books with hyperlinks, robust opportunities are abound, engaging both young and seasoned readers alike. Although still in its infancy, this emerging trend in visual storytelling is growing with more advanced, user-friendly capabilities as the technology becomes more mainstream.
NHIA is currently the only college in the country offering BFA degrees that require all students to complete three semesters of professional practices, business marketing, and entrepreneurship studies for the arts.

I teach professional practices at NHIA and recently combined forces with my faculty colleagues, Lisa Cyr and Cory Levine, to give our first year students an opportunity to practice talking about their work. The episode is a little experimental and a bit of a departure from my usual format, but it was fun to hear young artists talk about their art, influences, and experiences as fine arts students."

PART ONE:
http://pauldurhambooks.com/telling-lies-to-children/2017/4/29/-25-live-with-freshmen-artists-at-nhia

# 26 - Live with the BFA Students at NHIA (Part I)

PART TWO:
http://pauldurhambooks.com/telling-lies-to-children/2017/4/29/-26-part-ii-live-with-the-bfa-students-at-nhia
A persistently uncertain economic climate has changed the playing field, forever altering the competitive landscape and significantly diminishing the traditional role of the freelance illustrator. To penetrate the instability in the marketplace and remain viable for the long term, illustrators must take a more active, forward-thinking, leadership role. They need to become more entrepreneurial, looking outside traditional venues to discover alternative markets for their work to move, grow and flourish.
A: Absolutely!
Organic free-flowing sketches are instrumental to the creative process. I start
each project by creating a word list and thumbnail sketches in pencil, one idea
right after another. The key is getting down as many good (or bad) ideas as
possible. The number of thumbnails varies, from a few to several pages. I know
when I’m heading in the right direction when I see it and feel it. Intuitive acumen is a necessary part of this
profession. It’s the unexplainable, the ‘a-ha’ moment you are striving for,
when you allow yourself to trust your instincts. Once I identify a few solid
ideas, I enlarge the sketch by hand, do some color blocking and then sketch an
outline on my canvas or illustration board (for my design work, this is when I
start computer construction). I tell my students that this is what sets them
apart from those who overlook the conceptual process of design and just hop on
the computer without any direction. If you skip this foundation step, you will
end up not only wasting time but your work will most likely end up looking
mundane as well.

gravitate toward clean and contemporary materials such as metal and clear

my art is very colorful, I need to showcase it, so I am careful to pick good

enamored with tactile forms of communication and have created a deeply
personal aesthetic journey of photocopying words and sometimes images to
create unique patterns. I then hand tear the resulting paper to form my collages.
The unexpected outcome of rough edges, uneven tones, broken lines and dot
patterns that arise from the xerography process are intentional. My work
symbolizes the importance of print media communication despite society’s
increasing reliance on intangible, digital forms of communication.

I take notice. I am particularly drawn to art and design that utilizes type and
geometry, specifically the bold and meaningful work of the Constructivism, De
Stijl and Bauhaus movements. Some of my favorite illustrators/designers are: El
Lissitzky, Alvin Lustig, Frank Lloyd Wright, Andy Warhol and Paula Scher. I am
also inspired by León Ferrari and Mira Schendel’s work, which explore the written
word through art. It’s quite impressive. In the end, inspiration is about
surrounding yourself with things that make you feel good in order to put you in
that right frame of mind to get your creative juices flowing. I’ve
accumulated a library of books and design publications, as well as several file

Because of advances in technology and the Internet, we are seeing a plethora of digital entertainment vehicles introduced into the culture. The opportunities seem endless. “More than any other genre of entertainment, gaming advancements are happening at an absolutely mind-boggling rate and the need to stay on top of technology is critical,” details Daniel Dociu, concept artist and chief art director for NCsoft North America. “When the next generation of gaming hardware comes out, the potential of the machines is high and developers need to question how they can best use or take advantage of the computing power. A lot of the time, it means more manpower and bigger budgets to create; an approach where more is more.” To read more go to my article in Communication Arts on Interactive Storytelling.

Q: Can you talk about your brand and how you were able to incorporate that vision into your promotional materials?
A: I provide narrative illustration inspired by whimsical advertising and storybook art from the 1950s and ’60s. My style could be categorized into the decorative tradition of illustration, which was popular during the mid-20th century. My promotional materials are anchored by my identity, which is a logotype built by splitting and stacking my last name into two syllables. I use a bold, playful, serif typeface centered within a square motif surrounded by a lyrical, decorative border.
I placed several spot illustrations onto a variety of two-sided postcards and business cards, as well as 4″ x 6″ folded greeting cards. I used several retro-looking typefaces to spell out Dave Szalay Design & Illustration as well as my website szalaydesign.com. Typography will continue to be an important element of my presentation since I come to illustration after decades of working as a graphic designer. The idea was to create an ongoing series that mimics nostalgic collectables such as bubblegum cards. The second part of my promotional effort was to create and post a video teaser that showcases a sampling of my work and demonstrates an animated short of one of my images. I am interested in motion graphics as well as still images. The video follows the vintage, whimsical theme that frames the work in an engaging and entertaining format, driving the character of my brand even further.

Q: What advice can you give other illustrators/artists when it comes to self-promotion?
A: I am a firm believer first in authenticity and second in persistence. As an individual artist, your brand needs to sincerely state who you are and what you do. Your brand is your packaging and the consumer of your product wants to know what’s inside. The goal is to engage someone’s attention, while presenting the type of work that you want to do. If your presentation is clear and concise, prospective clients may give you a shot. It is most important that you get your work out there, frequently refreshing your images with new ones so that people have a reason to follow you.
Q: How has the Hartford Art School low-residency MFA Program in Illustration helped you in further realizing your career goals as an artist?
A: I was able to essentially reinvent myself during my time in the program. I was convinced to steer toward graphic design and away from illustration during my undergraduate studies in the 1980s for job security. Working as a designer over the years allowed me to occasionally incorporate some illustrative elements into my layouts but it was never the focus. I recently downsized my design practice to focus on a full-time teaching position.
This was an opportunity to make a mid-career adjustment towards becoming a knowledgeable and practicing illustrator. It was not a huge stretch for me but I needed a springboard and some inspiration. Emerging myself into this unique program helped me gear up on the history of illustration through Murray Tinkelman and to explore and discover my illustrative voice through the studio classes. I feel my teachers and classmates inspired me to push myself much further than I expected. I am thoroughly energized and excited about both my teaching as well as my professional practice and most importantly, I’m having a blast!

The Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford has designed an elite low-residency MFA program for seasoned illustrators who seek to move their careers to the next level, while earning a master’s degree for college-level teaching. Dr. Murray Tinkelman, Hall-of-Fame illustrator, historian and the 1999 Society of Illustrators’ Distinguished Educator in the Arts award recipient, is the director of this cutting-edge program. Tinkelman’s years of experience in the field are an asset, attracting internationally-recognized artists eager to teach under his directorship. “It is taught by professional illustrators who are also dedicated and talented educators,” comments Tinkelman. “The students who enter this program are equally committed to the field of illustration. They come from all over the world, courageously checking their egos at the door and ready to plunge right into the learning process.”Lisa L.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: Can you discuss how your promotional materials communicate your unique style and overall brand?

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: My promotional materials are really all I am or at least all potential clients see of me. I need to make each piece communicate my brand, style and approach. Specific characteristics act as a hallmark of my work that identify it and separate it from others: color palette, drawing style, textures, points of view, etc. These make up my brand. But really that’s not all. I think a brand is the result of one’s values. One’s brand presents itself in many ways: how I write, what I say, how I answer the phone and the craftsmanship of my promotion pieces each communicate my brand.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: What advice can you give other illustrator/designers when it comes to developing successful self-promotional materials for both print and web?
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: <span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Be yourself. Be yourself consistently. And be yourself in many places. To me this means know who you are and identify what makes you unique. Work hard and consistently. Send out promotional materials, keep mailing lists current and send specific mailings to specific targeted audiences. Lastly, get yourself out there in a variety of media, including social media. This all translates to allowing yourself to be found and seen in a variety of places.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q:Your work has a sketchbook feel to it. How important is working in a sketchbook to you? Can you detail your approach.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: My sketchbook is always with me: at meetings, traveling, classes, relaxing and just everywhere. It’s my fun thing, my journal, my brain dump and my bucket. My finished work comes directly from my sketchbook. In it, I try new things, I practice and I even complete my finished work. I’ve had to do some research in finding the right sketchbook for me. It actually took me years. My criteria was size, paper thickness, tooth, acidity and how it takes multimedia like pen, ink, watercolor and acrylic. I had to try different sketchbooks to see how they worked. As my style has developed, so has my sketchbook choice. I currently use the Aquabee Deluxe 11″x14″.
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: Can you share some insights into your creation process when it comes to your illustration and hand lettering?
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: Ed Brodsky, the past director of Marywood’s MFA “Masters with the Masters” program, taught us to brainstorm. First you boil down your message to a short, succinct phrase. I write out the phrase in a single line. Then, I make a list of similar words under each word appearing in the phrase. The fun part begins by mixing and matching to create a unique direction. Sometimes solutions have a concept and drive a point home and sometimes they are a straightforward solution that rely on a unique style to carry the idea.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your approach to visual communications through the process, media and visual textures you employ?
A: I straddle lines. I’m an illustrator, designer, letterer, printer and artist. As far as my process goes, I prepare my designs in plates, scan them into the computer and composite them in Photoshop. My final product is digital and produced by offset lithography, serigraphy or giclee.

Q: Describe your artistic working environment and how it helps support your distinctive process and approach.
A: I strive to work regardless of my environment. I read a post Star Wars interview with Harrison Ford where the interviewer asked, “Do you believe in the Force?” Ford responded. “Yes. The Force is in you. Force yourself.” I like that. I believe we can accomplish more than we realize and that work is a key ingredient.

Q: What are your artistic and design influences and where do you look for inspiration.
A: Etchings in general are big for me as are pen-and-ink artists such as Albrecht Durer, Howard Pyle, Robert Lawson, Arthur Rackham, Edward Gorey, Maurice Sendak and others.

Q: What do you see yourself incorporating in your work as your vision evolves?
A: I’d like to push my drawings to new points of view, incorporate new textures and create new color combinations.
Marywood University’s Get Your Masters with the Masters MFA Program is a low-residency program with a sixty credit Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic design or illustration. “It’s specifically designed for working art directors, designers, illustrators, new media artists and art educators who have to budget their time and resources carefully, while continuing with their full-time occupations,” shares program director Steven Brower. “While production and technical skills are stressed, the thrust of our program is on creativity and concept.” Marywood University also offers a low-residency, twenty-four credit certificate in sequential art. “Study with the best over one year through independent studies and two weeks on campus for two summers. Former MFA student Chad Hunter comments, “If you want inspiration and the opportunity to study under a list of leading industry professionals, the Marywood MFA is the program for you. I thoroughly enjoyed the study tour sessions, visiting a long list of top design and illustration studios as well as small workshop presentations created just for our class. I was inspired by my fellow classmates, many came from a broad range of disciplines from across the country. The curriculum is well thought out and offers a wide-range of advanced-level courses that are perfect for anyone seeking a challenge. The Promotional Strategies class was one of my favorite classes. It allowed me to solely focus on creating a distinct set of branding and promotional materials as a perfect resource to jump-start the new creative vision I constructed during the program. The Marywood Get Your Masters with the Masters program is an invaluable resource for working professionals.”
Q: Can you talk about your brand and how you were able to incorporate that vision into your promotional materials?
A: My artwork is heavily music inspired, so it was a natural decision to explore promotional formats that alluded to album art, music packaging and band merchandising trends. As I developed my TEXAN GOTHIC illustration series, an iconography emerged that felt well suited to bold one-color silkscreen printing on shirts, turntable mats, scarves and posters. Combining hand-printed merchandise with the more elaborate full-color and 3D print imagery of the main series, I grew excited to represent myself as a one-stop shop for clients, especially those in the music industry. As for incorporating 3D glasses, I was guided simply by a personal curiosity for the format which then helped me to develop the imagery itself. Overall, the 3D experience is a fun and engaging promotional format to share with others.

Q: What advice can you give other illustrators/artists when it comes to self-promotion?
A: Every artist needs to find the approach that works best for their personality and brand. I think it’s best to first imagine how you yourself would like to see your artwork displayed. What’s unique about your voice, and what platforms might best communicate that to your audience? Also, consider making promotional items that you are confident could actually sell and not be just given away for free. That will help guide you to produce a quality product that clients can’t help but raise their eyebrows to.
Q: How has the Hartford Art School low-residency MFA Program in Illustration helped you in further realizing your career goals as an artist?
A: In addition to teaching me core business concepts that are essential to a successful career in the arts, the Hartford Art School program provided an unrivaled sense of purpose and momentum which enabled me to attack an ambitious amount of side projects and extracurricular involvements outside of the program. The low-residency format gave me the unique opportunity to work fulltime, while traveling for graduate sessions and simultaneously pursuing creative outlets in my home market. In my two years with the program, I became an active gallery artist, community arts proponent and volunteer, private drawing instructor, freelance illustrator and an established up-and-coming name in the Dallas market. That’s all in addition to the leaps and bounds made in my full-time design career and personal work. All of that said, the relationships made among the students and faculty are the core of the program, and I truly can’t say enough about how amazingly inspirational and supportive the community is.
